Do you love the velvet garments that you see in all the expensive catalogs?  If so, you can achieve the luxurious look of crushed velvet garments for a fraction of the cost with the simple process of Velvet Embossing.

 Instructions:

1.  Decide on the design(s) you wish to use.  We have found that the vest is much more visually interesting if you use two different sizes of the same design or two similar designs.

2.  If you are going to do a color-blocked vest, you need to emboss a sample image on each color of velvet so that you can visually align your color structure.

3.  When you have decided on images and color, you are ready to cut out your pattern pieces.   By cutting out the pattern before you do your embossing, you will not end up with all your images in the seams, cut up by the buttonholes, or placed where you would rather not have them.  Also, cut out your lining pieces at the same time.

4.  Velvet Emboss your vest panels by following the basic Velvet Embossing instructions:

With your iron on cotton and dry, place rubber stamp wood side down on a hard surface.  Place velvet plush side down onto the stamp.  Lightly spritz water onto the back of the velvet--do not drown the velvet.  Place iron onto the velvet firmly and hold 10-30 seconds depending on the size of the stamp.  You may lift the iron to check on your progress.  On larger stamps you will need to lift and replace down the iron in two or three different sections of the stamp to make sure there are no steam holes on your project.  When you can see the outline of your image through the back of the velvet and all your water is dry, you are done.

You may wish to emboss images on “other” pieces of velvet and position them onto your vest panels to give you a better idea of how you want to place the actual images.   Stay in from the edges a good three inches and closer to four inches around the button-holes.

5.  When your panels are embossed, you are ready to sew your vest together.  Follow the pattern’s directions for sewing.  We highly recommend that you use a velvet pressing board for pressing the seams.  It will keep the velvet from “crushing” at the seams.  Do NOT use it for the embossing process.
